The May 30th, 1937 Memorial Day massacre.
On Memorial Day in 1937, about 2,000 people were peacefully picketing the Republic Steel mill in Chicago, IL, for better wages and safer conditions.
As the people were marching towards the mill, about 300 police officers blocked the way.
As the crowd urged the police officers to let them continue, the police officers drew their weapons and started shooting into the crowd.
10 people died as a result of their injuries, nine people were permanently disabled, and 28 others had life-threatening injuries from the clubs of the police officers.
News of the incident was not readily available since "it would cause mass hysteria," a Paramount News official stated after it was found out that they edited the pictures. Photographs were published in newspapers, and one of them, the Chicago Tribune, wrote News articles against the protesters. One of the Chicago Tribune's captions was: "At the Height of the Battle here are policemen using their nightsticks and tear gas to subdue the attackers." less
