Food for Thought. I would bet ⅛ of a penny that this name doesn't sound familiar, Faye Glenn Abdellah (March 1919 - February 2017). Ladies and gentlemen, Dr. Abdellah is a USA born citizen with Algerian and Scottish roots, who is the reason healthcare has progressed. Yes, I know healthcare is unpredictable, and insurances just want money, while the pharmaceutical companies kill us all after taking our money. Progress, as in standards and responsibilities of hospitals that are federally and state mandated. Dr. Abdellah developed the educational material for helping patients with drug addiction, AIDS, and hospice. Dr. Abdellah had a large role in instituting home healthcare. She was instrumental for the development of DRGs, the system that is used by Medicare. Admiral Abdellah, an almost 40-year Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1949 - 1989 was the first woman and nurse Deputy Surgeon General from 1982 to 1989. Her hard work and dedication helped nursing focus more on the patient. To this day, her Patient Assessment of Care Evaluation is still in use in the USA. Dr. Abdellah has over 70 accommodations for her work in the healthcare sector.
