One of the most iconic images from WWII, the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima, now known as Iōtō. This occurred #otd 1945. Three of the men would be killed in action days later. One of them, a Native American named Ira Hayes would be memorialized in a song by Jonny Cash. (Hayes survived the war, but had a sad end…)

This Pulitzer prize photo taken by Joe Rosenthal was actually the second time the USA flag was raised that day. The first flag up was much smaller, and was switched to a bigger flag by Marines before this picture was taken.
